Reading Under the Stars

Presentation theme: educational advancements in planetariums

Primary grade literacy in the planetarium is often equated to converting a picture book or story for the full dome experience. Working with local public libraries and school based librarians we developed a »Reading Under the Stars« presentation for use during summer library and school programs that focuses on being as open as possible for each student's preferred reading material. Starting with a brief demonstration of oral history and storytelling then progressing to written storytelling with the planetarium. The participants then proceeded to read their chosen or selected books under the stars in a virtual »campsite« environment before sharing with their peers what is happening in their stories. Logistical and dome/classroom management strategies will be discussed to minimize younger reader stress in the dome
