Getting big Data into the dome – with the help of scientists

Big data is a common term these days and it has also reached the planetarium community. Modern telescopes, survey missions and supercomputers create a huge amount of fascinating and visually appealing data. But how to get the hands on these data and how to integrate them into the dome? What are the challenges and what are the advantages? Mathias Jäger talks about the challenges in motivating scientists to work with a planetarium and he presents some tricks and suggestions on how such a cooperation can be established. Thomas Niemann presents successfully integrated projects - the Gaia catalogue of stars and the StarForge computer simulations - and explains the technical hurdles which had to be overcome.
