AstroPix - Finding the Latest Astronomical Images for Fulldome Applications

Presentation theme: fulldome

High-quality imagery built from observational data is key in sharing cutting-edge astronomy results in a fulldome setting. However, finding suitable images that are recent, polished, and authoritative can be a challenge given the many institutions/websites that are home to these assets. AstroPix.org is a decades-long collaboration between many of the largest observatories spanning the spectrum of light to provide a »one-stop shopping« experience. Currently over 9,000 images from a multitude of missions are available, tagged with a consistent metadata scheme to make it much easier to locate the latest material in a format that is dome-friendly. The metadata include important contextual information for interpreting the images, including how colors are assigned to multispectral data as well as coordinates for determining the location and scale in the sky.

AstroPix has also been a partner in efforts like Data2Dome, and some planetarium systems already offer access to AstroPix assets. Learn how to access up-to-date images efficiently and see how it might be used in fulldome presentation workflows.

This project is part of NASA’s Universe of Learning, which creates and delivers science-driven, audience-focused resources and experiences designed to engage and immerse learners of all ages and backgrounds in exploring the universe for themselves.
