»Fulldome«: Best practices for fulldome cinematography, CG and Live Action

Presentation theme: fulldome

Dome productions, are more and more a crossroad where science meets art. Some fulldome films offer planetarium visitors an emotional experience, which goes beyond science and astronomy education. Sometime to achieve that goal, it is important to use all sort of filmmaking techniques. And this, regardless of the technique used, whether it's CG animation, traditional animation, live action filming, etc.

This presentation will deal with the visual narrative of dome films and, specifically, to a new approach to 360° visual language. We propose the use of a 360° shot scale where the vertical field of view is not fixed at 180°, but varies according to the story and the purpose of the projected image. For example, our shot scale includes projection field of view of 360° x 213°, 360° x 207°, and 360° x 15°. These examples are, in some part, equivalent to the long shot, full shot and close-up shot of traditional cinema.
